Revealing which US States are the most Harry Potter-obsessed

The announcement of a 10-year-long series featuring the most famous fictional wizard, Harry Potter, on Max has sent shockwaves across the internet. In under a week, the hashtag #HarryPotterSeries gained 62.5 million views.

Users took to social media to voice their opinions on the latest news with a whopping 22.8% of posts being negative towards the iconic Harry Potter series.

Following the recent series announcement and the upcoming International Harry Potter Day on May 2, we set out to reveal which states are home to the highest number of Potterheads.

18–24-year-old are the angriest about the Harry Potter Series

Online social media postings totaling 144,581 were found to contain 22.8% negative comments. 18–24-year–old contributed 67.1% of the negativity. 25–34-year-olds are determined to be the demographic group just behind 18-24.

Utah Named the Biggest Fans of the Wizarding World

Utah comes out on top as the US state with the most Potterhead’s, with 53 out of 100 residents having an interest in the show as well as 1.8 million recorded searches within the last 12 months alone.

Colorado comes in a close second, having 45.3 out of 100 residents making searches for Harry Potter in 2023. Out of the film franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came out number one in Colorado, having an average of 1,900 searches per month.

Methodology

Using search data, we analyzed key terms based on Harry Potter and the announcement of the TV show. We then looked at the number of searches in each state, dividing this by the population to find how many searches each state had per 100 residents.
