Two long-running dramas concluded: “Quincy, M.E., starring Jack Klugmanon NBC in 1983, and the original “Dynasty” on ABC in 1989…In 1997, CBS presented the first installment of the miniseries “Mario Puzo’s The Last Don. Based on the same-name novel by Puzo, author of “The Godfather,” it starred Danny Aiello, Joe MantegnaDaryl Hannah, Jason Gedrick,Penelope Ann Miller, Robert Wuhl, Kirstie Alley, Christopher Meloni andk.d. lang.

“Quincy, M.E.” began as a rotating part of the “NBC Sunday Mystery Movie” effective on Oct. 3, 1976 (alongside “Columbo,” “McCloud” and“McMillan” (formerly “McMillan and Wife”). After four 90-minute editions, it was upgraded to a one-hour regularly scheduled series.

CBS stood well above the competition on this second Thursday in May thanks to “The Big Bang Theory” season-ender, which rose to a 10.4 rating/19 share in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, this bested the year-ago season-finale (8.5/15 on 5.11/17) by 22 percent (which is unprecedented for an 11-year-old series). And it led into an 8.1/14 for prequel “Young Sheldon” at 8:30 p.m., which closed is rock-successful first season.

Next on the Eye net were two episodes of “Mom” (including the season-finale at 9:30 p.m.), which at an average 5.7/10 in the 9 p.m. hour benefited all season by the increased lead-in support for “Young Sheldon.”

NBC Adds “Manifest” to Drama Roster
NBC has announced another new drama addition to its 2018 programming line-up. It is called “Manifest” and it comes from RObert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke and is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Compari Entertainment.. The logline: When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Yet in the span of those few hours, the world had aged five years and their friends, families and colleagues, after mourning their loss, had given up hope and moved on. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible.

The cast includes Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina and Parveen Kaur.

NBC, additionally, has renewed drama “Blindspot” for a fourth season.

Freeform Orders “Everything is Gonna Be Okay” Pilot
Freeform has placed a pilot order for “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” a half-hour dramedy from “Please Like Me” creator, writer and comedian Josh Thomas. The pilot focuses on Nicholas, a typical 25-year-old still living at home with his single dad and two teenage half-sisters, who is not particularly helpful in raising his siblings, one of which has autism. However, when their dad becomes terminally ill, the girls have to cope with not only a devastating loss but also the realization that Nicholas is the one who will have to hold it all together.

Thomas created the concept, wrote and stars in the pilot with David Martin, Jon Thoday, and Richard Allen-Turner serving as executive producers for Avalon Television. Stephanie Swedlove and Kevin Whyte also serve as executive producers. Produced by Avalon Television and Freeform Studios, it will be distributed internationally by Avalon Distribution.


Telemundo Announces Programming Initiatives for Next Season
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises announced a programming lineup for the 2018-2019 television season featuring more than 950 hours of new series and multi-platform original content. On the digital front, the network presented new digi-social partnerships including a total-market entertainment series with E!, the first-ever digital female empowerment series leading up to FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, and a distribution deal with Hulu providing over 3,000 hours of Spanish-language content on the streaming service.

On the sports front, Telemundo Deportes revealed its plans for the Women’s World Cup in 2019, including approximately 1,000 hours of live and original news and information programming of the tournament from France. Universo cable channel will bring back its “celeb-realities” including “Larrymania” and signature series including “The Walking Dead en Español” and “Sons of Anarchy.”

Univision Announces 2018-19 Content Slate
Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) has unveiled its programming initiatives for the 2018-19 TV season. “This year’s Upfront is about ‘Culture Unbound,’ a tribute to the relationship we’ve established with our community that has made us the destination of choice for 25 consecutive seasons,” said Randy Falco, President and Chief Executive Officer, UCI. “We know the best way to connect with our audience is through live News, Sports, Music and unscripted entertainment, which we deliver across our portfolio everyday, and is our key differentiator in the market.”  

Univision’s programming strategy is geared towards scripted and non-scripted shows, live sports, live music and news. And the categories consist of supernatural, action dramas, crime dramas, dramedies, music, melodramas, sword-and-sandal, non-scripted and sports. NBC’s “World of Dance” Renewed for Season 3
Optimistic NBC has granted a third season renewal to summer dance competition series “World of Dance” ahead of its second season. The series, which finished last summer as the most-watched new summer alternative series in a decade, features dancers showcasing their talents and competing for a million-dollar grand prize. Executive producer Jennifer Lopez leads a judging team that includes Derek Hough, Ne-Yo and host/mentor Jenna Dewan.

“We set out to make ‘World of Dance’ a competition series of the highest caliber — every act that hits the stage gives their all and challenges themselves against the most elite athletes in the world,” said Jennifer Lopez in a statement. “As an executive producer and judge, I’m constantly reminded of the heart and determination it takes to rise to the challenge and become the best of the best. I can’t wait to see the talent that comes across our stage for Season 3.”

Fox Renews Drama “Star” for Season 3
Fox has issued a third season renewal to drama “Star,” which this season out of compatible “Empire” improved its audience retention. Chances of remaining in the Wednesday 9 p.m. ET hour next seaso are likely.

Additionally, co-creator Lee Daniels has inked a new overall deal with producer 20th Century Fox Television. “Lee is not just an extraordinary writer and director, he’s a talent magnet who’s full of creative energy,” said studio chiefs Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “He’s also one of the most entertaining and authentic voices we’ve ever encountered. From ‘Empire’ to ‘Star’, when you work with Lee on a project, you know you’re going to be spellbound not just by the idea, but also by how it’s filtered through his unique lens. He’s a creator with many more stories to tell and we’re grateful he’ll be telling them with us.”

Fox Cancels Three Live Action Sitcoms
Fox has opted against new seasons of a trio of live action sitcoms: “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Last Man on Earth” and sophomore “The Mick.” Of the three, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has the longest run at five seasons, and Hulu is reported to have already expressed interest in a sixth season. Stay tuned.

Adult Swim Orders 70 New Episodes of “Rick and Morty”
“Rick and Morty” creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland announced on Instagram that Adult Swim has ordered 70 new episodes of the animated sitcom. Debuting on December 2, 2013, “Rick and Morty”  follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe.

“Rick and Morty” will also be featured in the return of the country-wide tour of the Rickmobile, which hits the road on May 17th starting in Atlanta, GA. The mobile pop-up shop will be offering new exclusive, custom-designed show collectibles at more than 50 stops, including San Diego Comic Con in July.


Erik  Griffin will return for his second Showtime comedy special, “Erik Griffin: Amerikan Warrior,” on Friday, June 8 at 10 p.m. ET. Filmed at the Star Theater in Portland, Oregon, the new hour-long special flips convention on its ear with Griffin deconstructing everything from social norms, personal responsibility and lazy protesting to the righteously religious and the female renaissance, all while skewering his own sense of male entitlement.

Katz Media Group has promoted media executive Stacey Lynn Schulman to chief marketing officer. Schulman joined Katz in 2014 as EVP of strategy, analytics and research, providing audience and consumer analytics for Katz partners, advertisers and agencies. In her  new role, she will lead a team of marketing and insight professionals across both Katz Radio Group and Katz Television Group, driving overall marketing strategy and insights for Katz’s 14 regional offices.
