Pinktastic Plastixx: The Power of Pink Punk Pop at the Canyon

By Gordon Durich

Pinktastic Plastixx, the new super original pop punk/rock band opened for The English Beat at The Canyon, Agoura Hills and wowed the crowd.

Led by singer Kitten Kay Sera, aka “Pink Icon” who performed with a pink blow dryer-shaped microphone, Pinktastic Plastixx are high energy, sexy and sweet.  Backed by her “Barbiecore” bandmates Rocky Rose on keytar, Celinda Chang on guitar and backing vocals, Mike Clairmont on bass and on sticks, Alexa Rae, this is more than just  girls wanting to have fun. Cyndy Lauper-plural or The Go Go’s.  Kitten’s vocals were assured and rich.  Their well received set at The Canyon featured the songs “Pink Panther”; “Pink is Punk” and included a smashing cover of “Crimson and Clover.” They even did a “pink-off’ inviting audience members who were wearing pink to play a fun game, with a giveaway.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kitten and Rocky before the show. Their tight playing was clear on all their numbers. My favorite was “Cleavage Tattoo.”  Bandmate Rocky Rose apologized she could not autograph cleavage as it was “family dinner time.”

Other standout songs were “Pink is Punk” and Jimmy Eats World’s “The Middle.” “I love that song, it’s so positive,” Kitten said after performing a great version of it.  If you like bands like the B52s, Weezer and pop punk singers like Lene Lovich, you’ll love the Pinktastic Plastixx, although they’re hard to compare.  I’m sure they’d be a big hit in Japan. The only drag was their set was so short.  From debuting at the notorious Viper Room, West Hollywood to the fantastic Canyon, Agoura Hills…watch out for more from this terrific band.
