Nominees Unveiled for 2018 AVN Awards

Actress Uma Jolie arrives for the 2017 AVN Nomination Party at Avalon on November 17

LOS ANGELES—A capacity crowd of industry luminaries descended Thursday night upon downtown L.A. to jubilate in the anxiously awaited announcement of the nominees for January’s 35th annual AVN Awards ceremony.

Sponsored by MyFreeCams.com and hosted by Kat Dior and Chad White, the fourth annual AVN Awards Nomination Party kicked off with the revealing of the official Trophy Girls for the 2018 show, Ayumi Anime and Sofi Ryan, as well as the comic co-host, Aries Spears, who will be joining adult stars Angela White and Harli Lotts on the awards stage.

Another big reveal of the evening was the addition of a brand-new category, Best Action/Thriller, to recognize the proliferation of ambitious features in the past year employing heavy elements of suspense, chills and peril. In addition, though not announced at the event, AVN instituted a second new field for the 2018 awards dubbed Best Lewd Propositions Movie. In a sense a staple of adult movies for as long as they’ve been made, this category puts a name for the first time on the age-old setup device of procuring sex by way of coercion, manipulation, barter or the pretense of some sort of opportunity, which has seen a boom of late as the central theme of many anthology-style releases.

Some may note fewer web categories on this year’s list—in fact, AVN has merged what remains with the production categories into one all-encompassing group, Video & Web—but fear not: Websites have a robust presence in the nominations due to a change in the AVN Awards rules that opens up all scene categories to membership site content. What’s more, there will be expanded categories in the AVN Fan Awards that will highlight websites, cam models and indie clip producers. The Fan Awards will open for voting on Black Friday (November 24).

Last but not least, for those who feared adult parodies had gone the way of the dodo, good news: AVN found during the nominations process that the beloved genre of triple-X spoofs remains a viable one, and hence our Best Parody category lives on.

The 2018 AVN Awards Show takes place January 27 at The Joint inside Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, topping off a full week of events at the resort starting with Internext January 20-23, followed by the concurrent AVN Novelty Expo (January 24-26) and AVN Adult Entertainment Expo (January 24-27).
