Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/11/17 – Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake: China Girl” starring Nicole Kidman and Elisabeth Moss will enter its six-part second season on Sundance TV this September.  This part of the series premiered as special events at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and will follow up the gripping 2013 miniseries.

The new episodes were set in Australia rather than New Zealand, but are informed by the same kind of sexual, psychological, and sociopolitical frankness found in the original. Elisabeth Moss returns as Detective Robin Griffin, who must disentangle the mystery presented by a suitcase containing strands of long black hair and much more dumped into the sea by an Asian woman and white man.

The broader context for this turns out to be Sydney’s prostitution business that makes indentured servants and borderline slaves out of undocumented Third World women.  Sharp writing, a superb cast, and seamy locations should more than satisfy viewers of the old series and win new ones.

“Top of the Lake: China Girl” is produced by See-Saw Films for BBC Two in association with BBC First and Foxtel in Australia, BBC UKTV in New Zealand, SundanceTV and Hulu in the United States, ARTE in France and BBC Worldwide.
