Lorde Performs at iHeartRadio Secret Sessions By AT&T at the Houdini Estate in Los Angeles

iHeartRadio Secret Sessions By AT&T Featuring

Last night, Lorde performed at  iHeartRadio Secret Sessions By AT&T Featuring Lorde, a secret show presented by iHeartRadio and AT&T in Los Angeles. The performance at the Houdini Estate (a location that was not released until the day of show) included songs from her new album, Melodrama, released earlier this summer. The crowd loved seeing her perform new songs “Green Light,” “Liability,” and “Homemade Dynamite,” as well as previous hits such as “Royals” and “Buzzcut Season.” Below please find highlights from the show.

Prior to the “iHeartRadio Secret Sessions By AT&T Featuring Lorde” in Los Angeles, iHeartMedia launched an innovative social contest using Snapchat’s new feature Snap Map to give away tickets from August 23-27. Local fans entered by finding iHeartRadio’s Los Angeles personalities’ Bitmojis on Snap Map. While in the same geo-fence as the Bitmoji, fans took snaps using iHeartRadio’s exclusive “iHeartRadio Secret Sessions By AT&T ft. Lorde” filter, to send the snap to the iHeartRadio account with #iHeartLorde and #iHeartContest or post the photo on Twitter or Instagram with #iHeartLorde and #iHeartContest.

·           Celebrities in attendance included Bellamy Young, Vanessa Hudgens, Becca Tilley, and Heather Morris.

·           Before giving a powerful performance of her new song “Liability,” which she wrote with friend Jack Antonoff of Bleachers, Lorde spoke to the audience. “This is one of the earliest songs that we wrote, and it’s one that means a lot to me and I think is going to mean a lot to me for a long time. Some of the songs you write are about emotions that you’ve been feeling for a long, long time.” “I had been thinking about the ideas that were expressed in “Royals” for like two years. And [“Liability”] was the most potent hour of last year. I just had to get it down, it was the craziest feeling. And it’s not a feeling that visits me often, but I’ll never forget it.” Lorde spoke about getting out of the house and walking three or four miles because she was so angry, until she had to call an Uber to get back home. She was crying in the back of the Uber while listening to “Higher” by Rihanna. “It was the kind of crying where I was trying to do it really quietly so the driver didn’t hear me. He definitely knew I was crying, let’s be real. She sang a little riff from “Higher,” excited that it worked with the chords from “Liability.” “I was crying because I was feeling this very specific feeling of being “too much” for somebody. It’s a very strange feeling when you feel like you’re too much. Like you’re taking up too much space. And I felt like no one could ever love me for all that I am because I’m a lot… I feel everything so deeply and that’s really what Melodrama is about; the depth of emotion, especially when you’re 19 or 20.” “Ever since I wrote that song I’ve felt such a suit of armor—there’s such a force field between me and that feeling. It’s like writing this song helped me celebrate being “too much.” It makes me feel powerful now.” She joked, “This is my one moment where I talk to you like a camp counselor. I’m sure if you listen to my music there’s probably moments where you feel like you’re a little much. Maybe you’re an intense person, maybe you walk into a room and you bring a lot with you swirling around, but I want you to know that you are not too much. You are perfect. And I’ll always be your friend, I promise.”
