Countdown to the Start of the New TV Season: 12 Days
Series launches: “Lassie” on CBS in 1954; NBC western “Bonanza” in 1959; sitcoms “Family Affair” on CBS and “The Monkees” on NBC in 1966; CBS’ animated “Josie & the Pussycats” on Saturday morning in 1970; “All in the Family” spin-off “Maude” on CBS in 1972; ABC family drama “Life Goes On”in 1989; ABC’s “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” in 1993; and Fox’s “Party of Five” in 1994.  At 17 seasons on CBS (and three additional in first-run syndication from 1971-74), this first edition of “Lassie” had a particularly long run. “Bonanza” at 13 and one-half seasons, however, was not far behind…Celebrity Birthdays: “Gotham” star Benjamin McKenzie is 40; Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is 37.

Did You Know?:
“Bonanza” was the top-rated show in all of primetime from 1964 to 1967.  It finished nine of its 14 seasons ranked in the Top 5.

RATINGS BOX

Tuesday 9/11/18

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 5.4/ 9, CBS: 3.6/ 6, ABC: 3.0/ 5, Fox: 1.4/ 2, CW: 0.5/ 1

Percent Change From the Year-Ago Week:
ABC: +58, CBS: +16, Fox: + 8, NBC: – 8, CW: -17

NBC, of course, held a solid advantage in the Tuesday household overnights thanks to “America’s Got Talent,” which at a 7.0 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m. stood well above anything else last night. Comparably, that bested the season-finale of ABC’s gooey “Bachelor in Paradise” (#3: 3.6/ 6 from 8-10 p.m.) by a hefty 94 percent. And it led into 10 p.m. special, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine Presents NBC Fall 2018,” at a modest 2.1/ 4 in the hour. While I understand why NBC kept “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alive after Fox swung the axe, there is no reason to think many viewers will watch it.

Documentary “The Mayo Clinic: Faith – Hope – Science,” executive produced and directed by Ken Burns, will debut on PBS on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET. The logline: The two-hour film is a timely look at how one institution has met the changing demands of healthcare for 150 years and also the contemporary issues of how the clinic’s revolutionary approach to patient care plays out in today’s modern healthcare system. It begs the question of how the model of care at Mayo (eg, doctors paid on salary rather than according to the number of patients or tests ordered; collaboration across specialties that results in more efficient diagnoses) can be made available elsewhere.
