“Flip or Flop” Star Tarek El Moussa Gets His Own HGTV Series; USA Renews “The Purge”

 Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) July, 24, 2019 – ON THIS DAY CBS sitcom “Morton & Hayes,” produced and hosted by Rob Reiner, began its six-episode run in 1991…NBC announced in 2003 that Matt LeBlanc would be featured in spin-off “Joey” after “Friends” concluded in the spring of 2004. “Joey” lasted two seasons, producing 46 episodes from 2004-06…Celebrity Birthdays: “Wonder Woman” star Lynda Carter is 68; Kadeem Hardison (“A Different World”) is 54; Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth is 51; Jennifer Lopez is 50; Rose Byrne (“Bridesmaids”) is 40; “Dancing with the Stars” winner Bindi Irwin is 21.

-Did You Know?:
According to Lynda Carter, the original trio on ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” – Farrah FawcettJaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson – all auditioned to play Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman. Angie Bowie and Joanna Cassidy also tested for the role.

Ratings Breakdown:
Led by perennial summer sensation “America’s Got Talent,” NBC beat the four competing networks combined in the overnight households. The competition averaged a healthy 6.9 rating/13 share from 8-10 p.m., which was 130 percent above the second highest rated show of the evening, lead-out “Bring the Funny” (#1: 3.0/ 6) at 10 p.m. “Bring the Funny,” which owes any audience it has to “AGT,” bested competing (and already renewed) “Blood & Treasure” on CBS (#2: 2.1/ 4) by 43 percent.

In the specials department was “USA Champions: The Story of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup” on Fox at a 0.9/ 2 in the overnight households at 9 p.m., which finished a distant fourth in the hour.

“Flip or Flop” Star Tarek El Moussa Gets His Own HGTV Series
Tarek El Moussa of “Flip or Flop” fame will star in a new original series for HGTV, “Flipping 101 w/ Tarek El Moussa.” The 14-episode series will feature Tarek as he mentors real estate novices to help them learn the secrets of a successful flip. With hundreds of profitable sales under his belt, Tarek is ready to lend his invaluable expertise to those who want to win big in the competitive real estate game.

“Flipping 101 w/ Tarek El Moussa” is slated to premiere in early 2020.

Additionally, Tarek also returns for a new season of “Flip or Flop,” alongside his ex-wife and business partner Christina Anstead, on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 9 p.m. ET/ on HGTV. Also premiering that day is “Tarek’s Flip Side,” a new digital series available on the HGTV app, HGTV.com, on-demand across all platforms, HGTV Facebook and HGTV’s YouTube channel. The series offers fans a glimpse of Tarek’s personal life as he works hard, plays hard and then slows down to enjoy quality time with his kids and family.

Netflix Orders Docuseries “Basketball or Nothing”
Netflix has picked up the first series, “Basketball or Nothing,” resulting from its co-production partnership with Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour champion Rickie Fowler and his Main Event Productions.  All six half-hour episodes of the docu-series will be available for streaming on Netflix on Friday, August 2nd at 3:01 a.m. ET.

“Basketball or Nothing” was conceived by The WorkShop Content Studio’s Producer/Director Matt Howley.

The logline: Filmed on location in Chinle, Arizona, the docuseries follows the lives of the Chinle High School boys’ basketball team based on the Navajo Nation reservation, the largest tribal area in America. For denizens of Navajo Nation, running water and electricity are considered luxuries. The Median household income is less than $30,000. Alcoholism and suicide are major issues in this part of the country. For the Chinle High Wildcats, basketball played at a state-of-the-art gym is the ultimate escape from life’s troubles while balancing home, academics and sports.

With their aim set on an Arizona State Division III Championship, the Wildcats’ games attract more than 6,000 people to a town populated by only 4,500 residents. Some fans hitchhike to these games and others travel distances of up to 80-miles.

Nat Geo Announces Limited Series “Mission Oceanx”
National Geographic has ordered a six-part series tentatively called “Million Oceanx” from BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit (makers of “Blue Planet II”), in a Co-Production With Ocean Exploration Leader OceanX and Executive Producer and National Geographic Explorer-at-Large James Cameron. The logline: “Mission Oceanx” will tell the stories of young explorers, scientists and filmmakers as they embark on their mission, dealing with challenges that arise from seeking to solve some of the ocean’s greatest outstanding mysteries: What happens when a great white slices through the sardine run being documented? How can humans decipher the language a mother whale speaks to her calf?

“Mission Oceanx” will premiere in 171 countries and 43 languages on National Geographic, with the first season focusing on the Indian Ocean, with the aim that it will become a recurring series focusing on a different ocean each season.


USA Renews “The Purge” for Season 2
USA Network has greenlit horror anthology series “The Purge” for a second season, with an unconfirmed number of new episodes. Based on the movie franchise of the same name, “The Purge” revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Season  two will explore how a single Purge night affects the lives of four interconnected characters over the course of the ensuing year, all inevitably leading up to the next Purge.

The series stars Gabriel Chavarria, Hannah Emily Anderson, Jessica Garza, Lili Simmons, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell and Lee Tergesen. The upcoming second season is executive produced by the film franchise creator James DeMonaco, who executive produces along with his partner for Man in a Tree, Sébastien K. Lemercier; Krystal Houghton Ziv, James Roland, Tim Andrew, and Jason Blum.
