Baby Driver

Knowing nothing about this film when I chose to watch it, it was an amazingly wonderful surprise! This major action crime film has music as it’s “driving” force.

Written and directed by Edgar Wright, the central character, Baby (Ansel Elgort, son of fashion photographer Arthur Elgort), is a music lover who is coerced to work as a getaway driver for a kingpin (Kevin Spacey). The film features choreography in which the actors’ actions synchronize with its soundtrack. (And what a soundtrack! More on that later!)

The acting is SO good in this film, that I got lost in each character, including bassist Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) appearing as thug Eddie “No Nose!” Jamie Fox’s character in the film was both exciting and frightening, as this is someone we are not used to seeing him play. And he played it well. The cast worked so well together – I loved Jon Hamm playing a sexy bad guy.

If you like action, cops and robbers, justice, and great music, you have to see this. It has you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, wondering what will happen next! The twists and turns are of the unusual kind, which makes for the best films. This is one of the top unique films I have seen this season!

The soundtrack of this film was also amazing, probably some of the best music I have heard in all the films that I’ve watched for awards season. Going from old soul R&B to rap to reggae to country and classic rock music, it, and Baby, are the driving force of this film. Baby’s collection of iPods for different scenarios was a brilliant way to pair music with a film. From his romantic music when he is with a girlfriend to the heavy tunes while driving the getaway car, one will appreciate every single tune in this film.

Unfortunately in the fallout of accusations of sexual misconduct by so many in Hollywood, this film will probably not receive the accolades it deserves, due to one of the lead characters appearing in the list of abusers.

Despite that, I highly recommend this film. I gave it a 4.5 !
