Award-Winning Pro-Social Campaign "Erase the Hate" Relaunces


Multi-Million Dollar Campaign Includes Erase The Hate Accelerator That Supports and Funds Emerging Voices in the Fight Against Hate Advisory Council Includes Prominent Anti-Hate Thought Leaders Nationwide


NEW YORK, NY; OCTOBER 10, 2017 — Today, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Chairman Bonnie Hammer announced the relaunch of Erase The Hate, an Emmy Award-winning pro-social initiative founded under her leadership in 1994, to combat hate and discrimination in America. In development for well over a year to address the epidemic of hate spreading at an unprecedented pace online and in our communities, Erase The Hate has been reinvented in urgent, timely and impactful ways to support and encourage action taken by a new generation. The nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, Civic Nation, will partner with Erase The Hate to help carry out the campaign’s mission.

Hammer will leverage the resources of NBCU Cable Entertainment, one of the industry’s leading entertainment portfolios, to identify and amplify new voices campaigning for tolerance, respect and inclusivity. The portfolio, which includes USA Network, SYFY, Bravo, Oxygen, E! Entertainment, and Universal Kids, as well as Hollywood studios Universal Cable Productions and Wilshire Studios, will use its storytelling capabilities, reach and influence to empower change makers, jumpstart their ideas and reinforce their messages. Rolling out over the next several months, Erase The Hate is a multi-million dollar commitment, including monetary contributions, air-time, marketing and communications support and more.


“When we launched Erase The Hate over 20 years ago, it was truly inspiring to see so many people rally around the call for inclusion over prejudice. We’ve dedicated a lot of thought for a very long time reimagining this campaign for today’s digitally-connected world because sadly, this work feels more urgent now than ever before,” said Hammer. “I’ve always believed people aren’t born knowing how to hate…they are taught to hate. It’s time to channel our energy into doing what we can to break this destructive cycle.”

The campaign will support the efforts of those rejecting hate and instead choosing to create dialogue, action, support, opportunities and connections. Key elements include:

Erase The Hate Accelerator

Central to the effort will be the Erase The Hate Accelerator, an innovative program that identifies, supports and funds emerging activists, and fast-tracks their ideas toward greater impact. Erase The Hate will champion individuals and organizations campaigning for positive change in pioneering ways across the country. The Accelerator will provide grants; coaching and mentorship from leaders in the field; marketing; publicity; and skill-based support from Cable Entertainment’s employee volunteer corps.


Erase The Hate Discretionary Fund – Rapid response is essential in the fight against hate. The Erase The Hate Discretionary Fund is a real-time mechanism set in place to provide micro-grants to people and organizations taking action in local communities at times of crises.

Erase The Hate Advisory Council – Erase The Hate will be guided by an Advisory Council, composed of thought leaders who are helping to combat prejudice on critical fronts. The Council will also provide recommendations on candidates for the Accelerator and Discretionary Fund. The following individuals comprise the current advisory council; additional members to be announced in the coming weeks.


Rebecca Cokley, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress – Cokley focuses on disability policy at the Center for American Progress. She previously served as executive director for the National Council on Disability. Throughout her career, Cokley has worked to make stronger and deeper connections across civil rights communities.



Sarah Kate Ellis, President, GLAAD – Sarah Kate Ellis was named President and CEO of GLAAD in 2014 where she has refocused the organization’s advocacy to accelerate acceptance of the LGBTQ community through a variety of new compelling campaigns, and programs. She began her media career at Condé Nast and has worked at New York magazine, In Style and Vogue.


Wadi Gaitan, Press Secretary, The LIBRE Initiative – Gaitan serves as press secretary and national spokesperson for The LIBRE Initiative. He previously worked as the Director of Communications for the Republican Party of Florida and served as press secretary for the U.S. House of Representative Republican Conference. In 2014, he joined Congressman Carlos Curbelo’s campaign as Communications Director and worked on Hispanic media for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. Gaitan was born and raised in P.G. County, Maryland.

Vanita Gupta, President and CEO, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights – In her current role, Gupta leads a coalition of approximately 200 national civil and human rights organizations working to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. She was previously the Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Obama Administration, Deputy Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, and Assistant Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Garrett Johnson, Co-founder and Executive Director, Lincoln Network – Johnson co-founded Lincoln Network which brings together leaders from the worlds of politics and technology to converse, collaborate and effect change. He previously cofounded a Y Combinator backed startup and worked on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Alexis McGill Johnson, Executive Director and Co-Founder, The Perception Institute – A thought leader, researcher and writer, McGill Johnson’s work spans politics, academia, social activism, and cultural strategies. Her work at Perception explores the ways our brains experience difference around identity and develops interventions to reduce bias and anxiety in our interactions.


Suhail A. Khan, Senior Fellow for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Institute for Global Engagement and Director of External Affairs at Microsoft Corporation – Khan has worked on Capitol Hill both in the Bush Administration and with the U.S. Department of Transportation. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Conservative Union in 2006. To combat Holocaust-denial and anti-Semitism, he led delegations of American and global faith leaders to Europe’s death camps. He also served on the Asian Pacific American Advisory Council of the RNC. Kahn is Chairman of the Conservative Inclusion Coalition and serves on the Advisory Council for the American Jewish Committee.

Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO, Voto Latino – Kumar is a dynamic leader and advocate who has dedicated her career to empowering Latino youth and engaging them in the political process.

Janice Min, Strategist, Eldridge Industries – Min is a visionary leader in entertainment and lifestyle publishing. Formerly the Co-President and Chief Creative Officer of The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard Media Group, she now leads Media Investment Strategy for the parent company of those influential brands. She also served as Editor in Chief of Us Weekly.

Janet Murguía, President and CEO, UnidosUS – Murguía, who leads the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the country, began her career in Washington, DC as legislative counsel to former Kansas Congressman Jim Slattery. She then worked at the White House from 1994 to 2000 becoming a deputy assistant to President Clinton. Prior to UnidosUS, Murguía was executive vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Kansas.

Ana Navarro, Republican Strategist and Commentator – Navarro served as National Co-Chair of John McCain’s Hispanic Advisory Council and national surrogate for the Senator’s 2008 Presidential campaign. Most recently, she served as National Hispanic Co-Chair for Jon Huntsman’s 2012 Presidential campaign. She is a political contributor at CNN, Telemundo, and CNN en Español.

Brittany Packnett, Vice President of National Community Alliances, Teach For America – Packnett is an education leader and activist for racial and social equity. Previously she’s been an elementary school teacher, legislative staffer, policy advocate, and executive director of Teach For America St. Louis. In 2015, she co-founded Campaign Zero, a comprehensive policy platform to end police violence. Packnett was named one of TIME’s 12 New Faces of Black, has been featured on the cover of Essence and ranked #3 on Politico’s 2016 Most Powerful list.

Ashley Spillane, Senior Advisor, Democracy Fund – Spillane is a social impact strategist bridging politics, technology and entertainment, with years of experience successfully developing and implementing organizational and campaign strategies. She is also the Founder of Impactual.

National Campaign Across All Networks – The national campaign includes several video series that will appear on-air across all networks and on each brand’s digital and social media platforms:

Change Makers will feature inspirational individuals taking innovative approaches to countering hate. The shorts will air across all Cable Entertainment networks.

Anatomy of Hate will feature voices of experts in the field, including members of the Advisory Council, to inform and educate online audiences about the origins of hate and effective ways to counter it.

Network talent will lend their voices to Erase The Hate, sharing on-air their personal experiences of intolerance and injustice.

Erase The Hate recognizes that a key part of its success lies in strong alliances and connections with those who share a commitment to this cause. Our nonprofit partner, Civic Nation, will coordinate opportunities that include:

Promoting anti-hate policy by engaging with state and local office holders, as well as influential community leaders.
