Los Angeles, CA (March 6th, 2017) – Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), Pantelion Films, the joint venture between Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B) and Grupo Televisa, and 3Pas Studios announced today that actress Anna Faris (Mom) and Mexican megastar Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included, the highest-grossing Spanish-language film ever distributed in the U.S, the upcoming How to be A Latin Lover) will star in a remake of the comedy smash Overboard. The movie will be co-directed and written by Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother) and Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers). Ben Odell (How to be a Latin Lover) and Derbez will produce via their 3Pas Studios. Production is expected to begin in May in Vancouver.

MGM partnered with Pantelion Films to co-produce, co-finance, and co-distribute the film with Lionsgate handling domestic theatrical distribution.

The 1980’s screwball romantic comedy will be re-imagined with a reversal of the leading roles. The story will focus on a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico’s wealthiest families (Derbez) who falls overboard off his yacht, and is convinced by a single, working class mom (Faris) that he is her husband.

Overboard marks Faris’ return to the big screen. She currently stars in the CBS hit comedy Mom opposite Allison Janney, now in its 4th season; has a #1 comedy podcast “Anna Faris is Unqualified” and will publish her comedic memoir Unqualified this Fall.  She previously starred in and executive produced The House Bunny.

Co-starring as Faris’ love interest is beloved Mexican film and television icon Eugenio Derbez. Best known to Latin American audiences for his long-running television series La Familia P. Luche, he skyrocketed to film stardom in the international box-office smash Instructions Not Included. Voted most influential Hispanic male by Variety in 2014, Derbez received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2016.

“The original ‘Overboard’ was beloved and the only way to bring it back is to reinvent the story in a whole new way,” says Jonathan Glickman, President Motion Picture Group, MGM. He added, “Anna and Eugenio are two of the most charismatic forces in comedy whose take on the material will modernize the story for a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

“This April, Pantelion and Lionsgate are proud to be releasing ‘How To Be A Latin Lover,’ our first release under our partnership with Eugenio and 3Pas.  There isn’t a more perfect follow up project to ‘Latin Lover’ than ‘Overboard’. Eugenio’s special relationship with his audience is certain to bring a new dimension to this classic MGM picture. We know it will be must-see comedy,” said Paul Presburger, CEO, Pantelion Films.

The original film, which is part of MGM’s storied library, was released in 1987 and starred Goldie Hawn as Joanna Stayton, a spoiled, selfish heiress and Kurt Russell as Dean Proffitt, a working-class hunk who takes a job aboard Joanna’s yacht, but can’t meet her exacting standards and is never paid. After Joanna accidentally falls overboard and develops amnesia, Dean has the chance to get even.

Looking ahead, MGM will release Orion Pictures’ The Belko Experiment with Blumhouse Tilt, written and produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), on March 17, 2017 and  Everything, Everything, based on Nicola Yoon’s bestselling young adult novel, with Warner Bros. May 19, 2017.  The studio is currently in production onTomb Raider starring Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander with Warner Bros. for a March 2018 release and is in pre-production on the remake of Valley Girl starring Jessica Rothe and Josh Whitehouse.

Faris is represented by Anonymous Content, UTA and Attorney Robert Offer. Derbez is represented by UTA and Behr & Abramson. Fisher is represented by WME. Greenberg is represented by ICM Partners and Greenberg Glusker.
