June 11–13, 2021

New airline services, Marilyn’s behind arrives and parklet controversy dominated the news cycle this week.  It’s a relatively quiet weekend but with much anticipation for the June 15the “reopening” that will arrive with much fanfare in the Coachella Valley.  From Arenas (Pride Mixer) to El Paseo, celebrations are being planned.  However, the mask rules are still in flux and we say “better safe that sickly”.
We bid a fond farewell to the regular cohost of the #ILoveGayPalmSprings podcast, Shann Carr, on episode 101 this week. Shann’s been planning for her post-COVID re-emergence into the world of entertainment and outlined many of her projects on the podcast.  I will personally miss her sharp tongue, quick wit and her drive for inclusiveness that has resonated over the past few years.  We’re looking for a new co-host, so please reach out to me if you know of someone who can join our weekly cast of characters!
Happy Pride Month!  Our plans for November Pride are in full swing!
P.S.  A reminder to complete the Community Marketing and Insights (CMI) study by the end of the month. We’ll be here to keep you updated on bar and nightlife events in our new “After Dark” section, plus community events, news you can use and our signature directory of LGBTQ-friendly businesses.

Most everyday activities and businesses will start to look more or less normal with the lifting of social distancing requirements, capacity limits, and forced closures. Vaccinated adults will no longer need to wear masks in most indoor locations, with some exceptions such as health care settings, schools, prisons, public transit and nursing homes. But yes, if vaccinated, you should be able to have a drink inside your favorite bar, go to the movies with friends who aren’t necessarily in your “pod,” and work out at the gym without a mask. Businesses may still impose their own mask requirements, and employees may still be required to wear masks, though that will likely soon be discontinued as well. On Tuesday, the bars on Arenas Road will be the setting for a Palm Springs Chamber Mixer and pub crawl to celebrate Pride Month and the re-opening, and there will be a “Mini-VillageFest” taking place nearby to mark the day and preview the return of VillageFest Thursdays in July. Meanwhile, businesses on El Paseo in Palm Desert will be toasting to the re-opening as well. All around the valley, businesses and organizations are making plans for a “Hot Vax Summer” to take advantage of the re-opening, and organizers recently announced a full-scale Palm Springs Pride in November. Stay tuned to Gay Desert Guide for more!
