2 Opportunites – LGBT organizations worth taking note

UGLA (UGLA.org), based in Eagle Rock, is sponsoring their annual scholarship program for Los Angeles area high school students who plan to attend community colleges, trade schools, and/or four-year colleges and universities. One of the scholarships is the Virginia Uribe scholarship (fund), and there are others. You can sponsor a scholarship as well, if you choose to.

The second opportunity is an event sponsored by the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, based in Princeton, NJ.

You are invited to an extraordinary event to benefit the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice held at the Abbey in Los Angeles on March 11th.

This fabulous fundraiser is hosted by BRCSJ Board Member, multi-hyphenate trailblazer Rasheed Newson, acclaimed author & “Bel-Air” EP & will serve as an impactful introduction to the LGBTQIA safe-space and community activist center.

“Bayard Rustin (1912 – 1987), the openly gay Civil Rights leader who organized the March on Washington, brought non-violence to the Movement, and spoke “Truth to Power”, left us a legacy worth continuing. During his lifetime, he possessed the courage to be unapologetically authentic as he worked tirelessly to improve the world around him — a rare feat then, and today. 

I’m inspired by Bayard’s shining example. That is why I wrote him into my novel, “My Government Means to Kill Me,” and that is why when the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice (BRCSJ) invited me to join its Board of Directors, I happily said, “Yes.”

For my first major task as a Board Member, I’m inviting you to a cocktail party on Saturday, March 11 from 3 – 5 pm in the Chapel at the Abbey in West Hollywood. The cocktail party is a fundraiser to support the work of the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, which among other initiatives, provides safe spaces to LGBTQ+ youth in crisis, organizes powerful programming and meaningful events, and is launching a new film project to secure and expand Bayard’s life and legacy.

At the cocktail party, you’ll learn more about the Center’s inspirational intersectional work, particularly the film project, from BRCSJ Chief Activist, Robt Martin Seda-Schreiber. You’ll also enjoy live music, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and scintillating conversation with other accomplished (and fabulous!) guests (such as yourself!) dedicated to activism and the arts. 

This will be a fun and fulfilling way to serve our community. This is your chance to walk in Bayard Rustin’s footsteps.
